Roos-N-More is a small zoo located in Moapa Valley (one hour Northeast of Las Vegas) which I had first heard about from reading the Review Journal. We finally made a trip out there a couple of weekends ago and I want to share with everyone what great fun we had there!
A little background first: The small zoo was started by two veterinarians in 2008 who had a menagerie of exotic animals including some special needs ones in their possession. All the animals are non-predators, friendly, curious, and used to humans as they are all hand-raised. The zoo only opens a couple of days each months and admission costs $10 pp with free admission for children under 2.
We arrived soon after the zoo opened and the entry process was fast, easy, and orderly. There were many many volunteers just walking around with animals and they were all great with answering questions from the visitors. While most of the animals were caged, the volunteers would take different animals of out of their habitat and let the visitors pet and play with them. The zoo is small so there isn’t much walking needed and there are plenty of benches/picnic tables around for a quick rest. Even though it seemed like a busy day we never waited more than 10 min. in line for any of the animal “encounters”.
We spent 2 hours there which was plenty of time for toddlers in my opinion. Here is a list of animals that we got to pet that day: monkey, baby kangaroo, big armadillo, baby armadillo, pelican, turtle, komodo dragon, coatimundi, python, camel, donkey, and some goats.
* There isn’t a lot of shade on the grounds so I would avoid going in the summer
* Bring plenty of water and snacks as there is no food sold there. McDonald’s is about 10 miles away
* The zoo is probably best for children under 5 years of age. Older kids may get bored.
* Watch out for the donkey named Oprah. Bianca’s finger got bitten, broken skin, blood and all 🙁
